Starting as a political news and celebrity portrait photographer in DC, Sam was instantly drawn to wedding photography as a space to promote more inventive ideas. Sam’s focus is on photographic techniques that are deceptively simple but have the potential to transform difficult or uninspiring shooting environments into one-of-a-kind opportunities for every photo made.
Some of my favorite weddings are the smaller ones, and Eric and Ashley’s day at Hotel Heron in Old Town Alexandria was exactly the kind of intimate I love. Close family and friends packed into one warm room, a ceremony that felt more like a gathering than a production. There is something about a smaller guest list that lets everyone lean all the way in, and you can see it in the faces during the vows and again when they walked back down the aisle with that big pink and white bouquet.
For portraits we wandered out into the brick sidewalks and green canopy of Old Town, which is one of the best backdrops in the whole DC area for this kind of thing. Then we popped onto the rooftop as the sun dropped low, and I got a little playful with some prisms and reflections to layer the two of them into that gold light. The rooftop tetris style wide shot might be my favorite image of the whole day. Congrats you two, thank you for letting me tag along and get weird with the camera.
