Starting as a political news and celebrity portrait photographer in DC, Sam was instantly drawn to wedding photography as a space to promote more inventive ideas. Sam’s focus is on photographic techniques that are deceptively simple but have the potential to transform difficult or uninspiring shooting environments into one-of-a-kind opportunities for every photo made.
I photographed Candice and Charlie a few years ago for a couples session, so when they emailed me about meeting up in Scotland for their 10 year wedding anniversary I didn’t have to think about it very long. Skye is part of Charlie’s family lineage, which made the whole trip feel less like a photoshoot and more like a homecoming with cameras involved. We based ourselves around Portree and basically let the island decide the rest.
Skye made it easy. The light there does things I can’t fully explain… one minute you’re getting blasted by wind off the loch, the next minute the clouds break and everything turns gold. We wandered the trails outside Portree, found gorse blooming everywhere, and ended up at the old bridge at Sligachan with the snow-capped Cuillin sitting behind them looking completely unreal. They both wore all black, her in this flowing gown that the wind absolutely loved, and against the rust and gold of the landscape it just worked. Ten years married and they spent most of the day cracking each other up, and that’s the part I hope comes through in these.
